EAT: Sakura: Bensalem PA

One of the best deals anywhere on the East Coast has to be the extensive list of HALF OFF sushi. Yes, you read that right. They offer half off sushi everyday all day at Sakura in Bensalem Pennsylvania. We found this busy place last year and just returned this past weekend. It was as fresh as always. There were a slew of new combinations, so we tried several.

We tried rolls of things we never imagined pairing together, after the traditional Tuna Sashimi. We ordered a Tuna Love roll, a Texas roll, a Coco Island roll and an American Dream roll. The Tuna Sashimi was cut in two nice thick chunks, served so fresh, it melted on my tongue like a soft cheese.

The Tuna Love roll was made with fresh tuna, avocado and tobiko inside, topped with spicy, crunchy tuna. At first sight I didn’t think I would enjoy the spicy, crunchy tuna, however I actually think this was one of the best on our plate. The flavors and textures were a perfect combination. The smooth, cooling sensation, of the avocado, was a nice contrast to the crunchy, spicy, tuna topper. Plus the heat was extinguished a bit by the avocado, so even one who tends to shy from heat can try this roll, I totally recommend it.

Next I went for the Texas roll, made with seared Angus beef and topped with barbecue sauce. The Angus was seared perfectly and served on rice with a bit of wasabi and julienne something (sorry I forgot), held together with the belt of seaweed and then topped off with a drizzle of a sweet barbecue sauce. It was okay, not great and not bad; however I left the other 7 pieces for my love.

The Coco Island roll was another palate pleasing combination of coconut shrimp (fried), rolled in rice and a seaweed wrap, topped with avocado and shredded coconut. I was hesitant about dipping this roll into soy sauce, because of the coconut; and was delighted to find that it actually highlighted all the flavors, instead of overtaking them. I must have eaten at least 6 of the 8 pieces, it was that good!

On a roll, literally, with all rolls being on the money; the last definitely did not disappoint. It was another instant fav. The American Dream roll was made with tempura shrimp, eel, avocado on the inside, topped with red and black tobiko drizzled with eel sauce. All of my favorite flavors rolled together into the perfect roll; no wonder they call it the American Dream. I can’t wait to go back for more!
